STUDIO 2B or not 2B: That is the Question....
In a truly misguided effort to become relevent to America's youth, the Girls Scouts of the USA have renamed and recast their program for girls 14-17. Instead of being Senior Girl Scouts, the program is now called STUDIO 2B. So far as I can see, the new program raises two responses among teenage girls:
1) Among girls who are not in Girl Scouts (the target market for STUDIO 2B), the response is What's this STUDIO 2B stuff?; whan they finally figure out that it's Girl Scouts, their response is then GIRL SCOUTS! That is soooo lame! This is exactly what the response to Girl Scouts would have been among these girls before Studio 2b; there is just now an additional what the heck is it? step involved.
2) Among girls who are already Girl Scouts, the response is I wanted to be a Senior Girl Scoutnot this STUDIO 2B crap!
To me this looks like the Girl Scouts have created a lose-lose situation all the way around. I will admit, the STUDIO 2B
Web site is really a masterpiece and is very attractive and appealing, but it's just not enough. Actually, except for Cookie sales, the Girl Scouts have managed to drop so far below the horizon of perception of most Americans that very few people will ever notice. But I still think it's a shame, and a real step backwards for Scouting as a whole. Oh well, at least girls at 14 who want a more traditional Scouting focus can join
Venturing (who unfortunately have a
massively lame Web site).
