Free Software I Install on a New Windows Vista System
What I put on my daughter's new notebook PC (running 32-bit Vista Ultimate): 7-Zip Version 4.5 http://www.7-zip.org/ Allows you to manage compressed files like .zip, .rar., .arj, .7z Adobe AIR Version 1.0.1 http://www.adobe.com/products/air/ Cross-platform runtime environment for building rich Internet applications using Adobe Flash, Adobe Flex, HTML, or Ajax, that can be deployed as a desktop application. Basically, AIR lets you run cool programs others have written with Adobe tools. Adobe Reader 9 http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/ Good ol' Adobe reader for reading PDF files. Apple Inc. - iTunes Version 7.6.0.29 http://www.apple.com/itunes/ NOTE THE VERSION: Old version installed at my daughter's request; it allows drag-n-drop to the iPod and more features no longer supported by the current version of iTunes. I set it to NOT auto-update so this version will stay put... Apple Inc. - QuickTime 7.4 http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ Quicktime Viewer. Google Chrome Version 0.0.0.0 http://www.google.com/chrome Fast and easy Web browser from Google; seems to always let me watch YouTube when Firefox chokes. HandBrake Version 0.9.3.0 http://handbrake.fr/ DVD "ripper" allows you to copy DVDs to your harddrive; optimized for creating iPod compatible video IrfanView Version 4.20 http://www.irfanview.com/ Graphics viewer/converter/printer Mozilla Corporation - Firefox Version 3.0.3 http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ Firefox Web browser. muCommander http://www.mucommander.com/ A cross-platform file manager that will run on any operating system which supports Java. It features a Norton Commander style interface to allow easy manipulation of files with many keyboard shortcuts. Also does FTP and SFTP. I did not install freeware for CD-ripping, audio editing, paint/bitmap graphics, draw/vector graphics or harddrive search as commercial software was installed for these purposes. I didn't put on Thunderbird, because like many college students all of her email is Web-based. What I add on my systems on top of that stuff: Audiograbber 1.83 http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/ Audiograbber is a program that copies music and stores it on your computers harddisk. Its main purpose is to copy music from CD's. This process copies the music digitally and thus you will get perfect copies. It includes functions to check that the copies made are true to the original. Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ A digital audio editor application A free sequential image viewer utility for Microsoft Windows used to view images one at a time in the style of a comic book. Everything for Windows 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista http://www.voidtools.com/ Harddrive search utility locates files and folders by name instantly; uses NTFS native indexing, so it has no index of its own.
