Ray Trygstad: What I Do

This is my version of John Walkenbach: What I Do which is HIS version of Cory Doctorow: What I Do.

Tools I use to do my job:

  • Hardware:
    Notebook:
    Dell Precision M6400 with Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, one 320GB HD, one 500GB HD, dual-layer BluRay-RW/DVD-RW/CD-RW, Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate; extra battery.
    Desktop Work: Premio Intel Core 2 Quad, 8GB RAM, 2.5TB hard drive space,dual-layer DVD-RW/CD-RW, Microsoft Server 2008 in workstation mode (Switching to Windows 7 Ultimate soon).
    Both notebook and work desktop systems have 1920X1200 displays, 17" and 24".
    In my Rice Campus office I run my desktop and notebook side-by-side using Input Director for keyboard, mouse and clipboard sharing.
    Tablet: HP TX2120US with Intel Core 2, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD, dual-layer DVD-RW/CD-RW, Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate.
    Netbook: HP 2133 Mini-Note, with Via C7-M, 2GB RAM, 120GB HD, dual-boot Microsoft Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux.
    Desktop Home: Sony Vaio Pentium 4 1GB RAM, two 120GB HD, one CD-ROM and one DVD-RW/CD-RW, TV tuner, Windows XP SP3 (planning to replace this with an HP Touchsmart 600).
  • External storage: Two 320TB and one 500TB USB 3.5" drives for music and backup. One 320GB USB, one 30GB USB and one 320GB eSATA 2.5 drives for misc & sneakernet use. One external DVD-RW/CD-RW drive.(Won the 2.5" USB drives in drawings at trade events.)
  • Phone: Work: HTC Evo 4G with wireless tethering;
    Personal: Motorola C168I (mega-cheap).
  • E-mail: Thunderbird and GMail; run my personal domain email through a GMail account and archive my university email to a seperate GMail account.
  • Mobile device: 16GB iPad (supplied by employer).
  • Mobile media: 8GB iPod (won in a drawing at a trade event).
  • Browser: Google Chrome and Firefox, on about a 50/50% basis.
  • Calendar: Google Calendar (syncs with my Android phone!).
  • RSS: all feeds in my iGoogle page.
  • FTP: WinSCP and ExpanDrive.
  • Text editor: Notepad++ and TextPad.
  • Graphics: CorelDraw X5, Corel PaintShop Pro XI, Inkscape, IrfanView. Also have Adobe Fireworks, Illustrator and Photoshop CS5 when needed.
  • Screen capture: Corel PaintShop Pro XI, IrfanView.
  • Screen Video Capture/Video Editing: Camtasia Studio 6 (upgrading to 7 before fall).
  • Accounting: None.
  • Office suite: OpenOffice.org, Go-OO distribution. Microsoft Office 2007 (have 2010 but haven't installed it except in XP mode). Lotus Smartsuite - WordPro only.
  • Writing: OpenOffice.org, Go-OO distribution.
  • Web Page Editing: Adobe Dreamweaver CS5.
  • PDF Prep: Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional.
  • CD ripping: CDex or Audiograbber.
  • Music/Video/DVD player: VLC Media Player.
  • Audio editing: Audacity.
  • Virtualization: Hyper-V and Sun VirtualBox on my desktop; VMware Workstation, Sun VirtualBox and Windows Virtual PC on other systems.
  • Server Terminal Access: PuTTY
  • Zip: 7zip and PeaZip.
  • Backup: SynchBackPro.
  • Blog: Moveable Type 3.11; migrated blog from Blogger.com.
  • Course Support and Delivery: Blackboard 8.0 on university servers, with additional content on my own server - trygstad.rice.iit.edu.
  • Advising Support: Sungard Banner 5 on university servers with custom advising apps by our Director of Undergraduate Advising, Matt Bauer.
  • Web Hosting: Work: Apache on Red Hat, Fedora or Ubuntu Linux on servers in my office, and Apache on Red Hat Linux on datacenter servers.
    Personal: Mostly 1and1.com.
  • Car audio: What came with the car or my HTC Evo.
  • Other tech stuff: Flip Video HD.
